Overview
Benin currently covers only half of its electricity needs, with much of its power dependent on imported fuels. Access to electricity remains limited, reaching just 40% of the population.
To support the country’s energy transition, this project aims to significantly increase the share of renewables in Benin’s energy mix. It does so by supporting the construction and expansion of the DEFISSOL solar power plant in Onigbolo, from 25 to 50 MW, and by extending electricity access to remote communities, particularly in northern Benin, through off-grid mini-power plants and stand-alone solar power systems for domestic use.
