Objectives
The objective of Green Paraguay is to raise awareness on climate change, protect the biodiversity, support the country in preservation and restoration of its forests, protect water supply and sanitation in Paraguay and to further promote responsible production (including circular economy) in the country.
The initiative is in line with the EU Green Deal and the Sustainable Development Goals 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), 13 (Climate Action), 15 (Life on Land) and 17 (Partnerships to Achieve the Goals).
Implementation
Green Paraguay is built around three main components
- Building a strong EU-Paraguay Partnership on environment and climate change. This includes fostering the partnership with Paraguayan civil society, local authorities, private sector, academia and media, with a focus on the youth.
- Raising awareness with young Paraguayans on impact of climate change and environment degradation on the life of people, as well as on possible benefits of a greener model. Moreover, the EU supports consumer and citizen action to protect the environment.
- Green Action with a focus on water and sanitation, responsible production and circular economy, and forest conservation/restoration and biodiversity. The EU uses a combination of tools, such as investments, guarantees, grants, Technical Assistance and twinning.
Expected results
By the end of Green Paraguay, deforestation should be reduced and forest cover in selected areas should be re-established. Selected water basin ecosystems and protected areas should be conserved and restored. In addition, supply chains free from deforestation should be promoted and traceability of supply chain mechanisms enhanced. Furthermore, civil society organisations’ oversight and participation should be increased.
