Description

The year 2020 should have been a celebratory year for accelerating gender equality globally. Instead, Covid-19 dramatically reversed the progress made over recent decades. We witnessed rising inequalities, poverty and gender-based violence, and women and girls were the first to be impacted. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, the European Commission presented the Gender Action Plan III (GAPIII). GAPIII puts forward ambitious plans to promote gender equality and women's empowerment through all external action of the European Union. It provides the EU with a policy framework with five pillars of action for accelerating progress towards a world in which all countries can, and do, fulfil human rights commitments.
The new Gender Action Plan takes especially important steps forward in terms of tackling the root causes of gender inequalities, with a stronger emphasis on economic and social rights. The key for GAPIII to become a success however lies in its implementation. To address this, CONCORD and the European Commission are jointly organising this digital event to explore the opportunities and challenges related to GAPIII implementation. This will be done in a dialogue with a wide range of civil society stakeholders working on gender equality in the context of the EUs external action.
