What is a SUMP?
Sustainable mobility is key to reaching multiple development goals: from accessing jobs, education and health services to ensuring clean air and a low-carbon urban transport system. Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans emerged in Europe to deal with the complexity of systemically transforming urban mobility. The SUMP methodology supports fact-based decision-making guided by a long-term vision, the assessment of the status quo and future trends, as well as a common vision with strategic objectives, and an integrated set of measures. The European Union has made available useful resources for practitioners and decision-makers to develop and implement SUMPs in the continent.
Why adapting the SUMP concept to other geographies is needed?
In this spirit, MobiliseYourCity was created to support cities and countries all over the world to prepare implementation-ready mobility plans and finance-ready projects, by adapting the European SUMP methodology and making it suitable for other geographies. In Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America there exist diverse but common challenges for urban mobility that differ from those of EU cities: lack of technical capacities of local governments, poor governance and institutional frameworks, low levels of private motorisation, a high share of active modes and public transport, and paratransit as the main, if not the only, mode of public transport. Such particularities led to the preparation of a MobiliseYourCity tailored SUMP Guidelines, leveraging European knowledge in sustainable urban mobility planning while bringing insights and lessons learned from its practical implementation in MobiliseYourCity geographies.
This high-level event will be followed by a series of webinars over March and April 2023 to dive into more technical aspects addressed to practitioners of urban mobility in MobiliseYourCity geographies.
