InfoPoint conference: Sustainable Agri-food systems and the Great Green Wall

The InfoPoint will investigate the connections between trees, farmers and food, and explore the impact of agroforestry on local communities’ food security and climate resilience. The session will showcase best practices from the EU-funded project “Regreening Africa” project, providing valuable insights into the complex impact of reforestation on local and global communities. Through a combination of stories and data, we will uncover how small, low-cost initiatives like Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) can transform degraded lands into productive, resilient landscapes.

The Regreening Africa project is part of the Great Green Wall Initiative, an ambitious project the EU has committed to from the start, and currently a flagship priority in the EU’s Global Gateway initiative. The Regreening Africa project alone has contributed to restoring one million hectares of land, working with hundreds of thousands of smallholder farmers to turn their deserts and degraded lands into thriving, productive and resilient landscapes. Working with methods such as Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), the session will highlight the enormous impact of low-cost, locally implemented initiatives.

The session brings together key actors working towards the same goal, but seldomly in the same room. It features the Alternative Nobel Prize Winner and Australian agronomist Tony Rinaudo, EU stakeholders working on sustainable agrifood systems, researchers, programme managers and experts from EU delegations.

This interactive session will include reflections on the lessons and evidence from the Regreening Africa project and application of the farmer-managed natural generation method, and invite to a debate on how these learnings can be applied to future restoration initiatives and investments like the Great Green Wall.
