Amazonia+ is a Global Gateway flagship programme, contributing to build sustainable and trusted connections with partner countries.
The overall objective of the Amazonia + programme is to improve the capacity of the countries of the Amazon basin to mitigate CO2 emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change, significantly reduce deforestation and forest degradation and improve their biodiversity.
The implementation of the Amazonia+ programme will contribute to the objectives set out in the Amazon Basin Team Europe Initiative.
Objectives
The regional component of the Amazonia+ programme covers all eight Amazon Basin countries and will specifically support local authorities and indigenous communities whereas the country windows for Brazil, Guyana and Suriname will focus on the sustainable use of forest goods and services.
The regional component’s output to be delivered:
- Strengthened capacity of Amazon Basin countries to prevent, monitor, control, combat and remediate deforestation, forest degradation and its drivers
- Strengthened capacity of Amazon Basin countries to prevent, monitor, control, combat and remediate the impacts of wildfires
- Enhanced participation opportunities for indigenous peoples and local communities in the development and implementation of environmental and forest governance policies and mechanisms.
For the regional part of the programme we have an allocation of €20 million of which €1.6 million is will be implemented by the JRC. The remaining amount of €18.4 million will be implemented by Member State Organisations (AICS, EF and FIIAPP). This includes the secretariat which will be covered by AICS, with a current estimate of around €2 million.
The country specific windows will cover:
- In Brazil - support in materialization of policies fostering a sustainable bio-bases economy in Brazil’s Amazon.
- In Guyana - support to reinforce monitoring capacities to prevent deforestation and promote sustainable livelihood opportunities in forestry for indigenous communities in the Guyana Shield.
- In Suriname – support to institutional capacity in forest management, including monitoring against deforestation, and promote sustainable livelihood opportunities in forestry for indigenous communities.
