Objectives
Team Europe, partner countries and other donors and partners (multilateral institutions, civil society, teacher representatives, philanthropic foundations and the private sector) join forces with the Global Partnership for Education to transform education systems, accelerate their access and improve learning. This boosts jobs and growth, drives gender equality and builds resilient, prosperous and inclusive societies.
Actions support partner governments to develop, finance, implement and monitor education plans and policies. Priority areas are: access; learning; gender equality; inclusion; early learning; quality teaching; and volume, equity and efficiency of domestic financing.
The European Union sees education as a basic human right. It is key for tackling today’s most pressing global challenges and achieving all of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The EU calls on all members of the international community to significantly increase their investments in education in response to a global crisis in education – a crisis of equity and inclusion, quality and relevance.
Empowering girls and vulnerable groups through education is key to curbing the rise of inequalities and accelerating progress towards gender equality.
Implementation
Working together at country level, we are
- narrowing in on the most stubborn barriers to get every child learning
- getting money to where it matters most
- using smart funding requirements and incentives to drive change
- helping education ministries influence budget allocations
- using innovative finance to support national priorities
Actions take place in 90 countries and territories in 2021-2025, which are home to more than 80% of the world's out-of-school children.
85 programme implementation grants are ongoing.
Agreements ('compacts') have been signed for 15 countries.
By the end of 2023, the following countries are expected to sign their respective compacts: Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cambodia, Chad, Comoros, Cote d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, El Salvador, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Gambia, Guinea, Guyana, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Nicaragua, Nepal, Niger, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Samoa, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Sudan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu and Zimbabwe.
