Medlink: decarbonizing North Africa and EU energy sector

Overview

The project consists in developing around 10 GW of renewable energy (Solar PV, onshore Wind, BESS) in Algeria and Tunisia, producing 30 TWh/year for local use and export, plus 4 GW of new electricity transfer capacity between North Africa and Europe. It aims to cut about 8 MtCO2 emissions annually in the EU and accelerate the energy transition.

The main activities are:

  • Building renewable energy capacity and transmission infrastructure.
  • Promoting market integration and policy reforms between North Africa and Europe.
  • Supporting local renewable energy industry and private sector growth.
  • Implementing financial and industrial components aligned with the “Piano Mattei” agenda, supported by Italy, Algeria, Austria, Germany, and Tunisia.
