Amazonia+

Overview

Amazonía+ is a regional cooperation programme that supports the eight countries of the Amazon Basin in addressing climate change and environmental degradation. The programme contributes to reducing CO₂ emissions, strengthening climate resilience, and preserving one of the world’s most critical ecosystems and biodiversity hotspots.

By fostering coordinated action across borders, Amazonía+ promotes sustainable development pathways that balance environmental protection with the needs and rights of local populations.

Key information

Approach and objectives

Amazonía+ aims to strengthen the capacities of Amazonian countries to tackle deforestation, forest degradation and wildfires. The programme promotes public policies and environmental governance mechanisms with a territorial approach, involving local communities, Indigenous peoples, and women.

Amazonía+ operates at different levels of governance:

  • Regional: the programme promotes knowledge exchange and strengthens governance with the participation of Indigenous peoples and local communities.
  • National/Transnational: the programme implements best practices and strengthens governance through transnational projects involving local and Indigenous communities.
  • Subnational/Local: the programme supports pilot projects and micro-funds in strategic territories, prioritising the leadership of women, Indigenous youth, and local/traditional communities.

Actions

  • Promote spaces for dialogue and coordination between territorial and institutional stakeholders.
  • Encourage scientific research and close knowledge gaps to support environmental decision-making and territorial innovation.
  • Facilitate and promote technical and scientific exchange between experts from the Amazon region and the EU.
  • Support Indigenous peoples and local communities by strengthening their capacities and environmental rights, ensuring their effective participation in decision-making and in the protection of the Amazon.
