PanAfGeo+

Overview

PanAfGeo+ (2025-2029) is the European Union's flagship programme supporting Africa-Europe partnerships in geological sciences. It strengthens geoscientific knowledge, services and cooperation to support sustainable development, responsible natural resource management and informed decision-making along the critical raw materials (CRM) value chain.

By reinforcing the capacities of African geological surveys and fostering long-term institutional cooperation, PanAfGeo+ contributes to climate resilience, environmental protection and sustainable investment across Africa.

Approach and objectives

Africa's sustainable development and green transition depend on reliable geoscientific data and strong institutional capacities. However, gaps remain in data availability, technical skills, and coordination across countries.

PanAfGeo+ addresses these challenges by strengthening African geological surveys and fostering Africa-Europe collaboration. The programme aims to:

  • enhance geoscientific knowledge and data accessibility
  • support evidence-based policymaking and land-use planning
  • improve sustainable management of natural resources
  • promote responsible and transparent investment along the CRM value chain
  • contribute to climate resilience, environmental protection and risk mitigation (e.g. geohazards)

Actions

PanAfGeo+ is structured around three complementary pillars that support Africa-Europe cooperation in geosciences and sustainable resource management.

Partnerships

The programme strengthens institutional cooperation between African and European geological surveys, fostering long-term dialogue, knowledge sharing and coordinated approaches to geoscience challenges at continental and regional levels.

Capacity building

PanAfGeo+ delivers targeted training programmes, technical workshops and knowledge exchange activities to enhance the skills of African geoscientists and institutions. These actions contribute to stronger geological surveys and improved access to reliable geoscientific data for policymaking and development planning.

Sustainable investment support

The programme promotes responsible and transparent investment along the critical raw materials (CRM) value chain. It facilitates dialogue and matchmaking between stakeholders, while strengthening geoscientific, economic and environmental, social and governance (ESG) knowledge to support sustainable resource development.

Country Windows

A key feature of PanAfGeo+ is the implementation of Country Windows, which enable participating countries to tailor activities to national priorities while ensuring alignment with overall programme objectives. This approach supports national ownership, responds to specific capacity needs and promotes coherence at regional and continental levels.

Participating countries include the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
